Meet Isabelle, our patient ambassador for Shriners Hospitals for Children — Spokane

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Spokane is proud to introduce Isabelle, 15, as their standard bearer for the 2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Isabelle was chosen as one of 22 patient ambassadors throughout the country to represent the health care system at the tournament, where she will serve as a standard bearer throughout the weekend, carrying the scores of professional golfers as they compete in the tournament. It is a rare “inside the ropes” opportunity at a PGA TOUR event, as well as the chance to share how Shriners Hospitals have helped transform her life.

Isabelle lives with her family in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, with her two brothers and one sister. Isabelle became a part of the Spokane Shriners Hospital family at age 1 when she lost her leg in a lawnmower accident. From the time she was just an infant, Shriners Hospitals for Children has provided her with her prosthetics and physical therapy.

“I have many fond memories, but the most memorable by far would be the time I got my first running blade,” said Isabelle. Peter Springs, the Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetics Services manager at the Spokane Shriners Hospital, had just finished making a prototype of her running leg and was testing it for height. “The moment he started screwing on the foot, I couldn’t help but bounce on it. It blew me away – it was light, flexible and gave me a spring in my step,” she said. Over time, she has seen many members of the Spokane Shriners Hospital staff, but she feels closest to the hospital’s physician assistant, James Annis, PA-C, who has seen her through the years as she has grown.

Isabelle loves sports, including volleyball, basketball and swimming. In her free time she enjoys baking, hiking and biking, and is involved in theater. In the future, Isabelle would like to pursue a career in a medical field such as nursing. “I would not be able to do any of the activities that I love without Shriners Hospitals for Children,” Isabelle said. “I am truly grateful for the gift they have given me.”
