Ryan Baker, M.D., receives Washington State Athletic Training Association Physician Award

Ryan Baker, M.D., receives Washington State Athletic Training Association Physician Award

The Spokane Shriners Hospital is proud to announce that Ryan Baker, M.D., was awarded the 2020 Washington State Athletic Trainers Association (WSATA) Physician Award. Dr. Baker is a pediatrician with a fellowship in sports medicine, the only pediatrician with this specialization in the region. He is greatly admired by his peers, staff and patients. Congratulations, Dr. Baker!

The WSATA recently released this message regarding the award:

The WSATA Physician Award looks to recognize a physician within our state who exemplifies the commitment of service to the profession of athletic training. Many physicians within our state support the athletic trainers they work closely with and the athletes they serve.

The Washington State Athletic Trainers’ Association awarded the 2020 WSATA Physician Award to Spokane Shriners Hospital physician, Dr. Ryan Baker.

Dr. Baker has lived and worked in the Spokane area since 2012, and his education includes a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in primary care sports medicine. Currently, he works on staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Spokane, and is the team doctor for not only Mt. Spokane High School, but North Central and Shadle Park High Schools as well.

Dr. Baker has improved the quality of health care for all Spokane area student athletes that he has worked with. He is approachable, personable, knowledgeable, and respected by parents, student athletes, coaches and administrators alike.

Dr. Baker’s advocacy and respect for the profession of athletic training in Spokane County is unrivaled. A nominator spoke of this in that: “...it has led to many positive conversations and changes within our county’s schools and health care clinics. One example from this past summer, athletic trainers from Mt. Spokane, North Central and Shadle Park High Schools, with the guidance of Dr. Baker, developed a thorough policies and procedures manual for our programs. This policies and procedures manual was met with resistance within the Mead School District. Dr. Baker met with local athletic trainers and the administrative team from the district to advocate for us as athletic trainers. He advocated why athletic trainers are important for student athletes and why it is important for athletic trainers to work at the top of their license and not just as first aid and emergency care. This conversation sparked a lot of positive changes for athletic trainers within our district that I have been trying to accomplish for years. Without his input, I am not sure what would have happened.”

Dr. Baker is also one of the leaders on the Northeast Washington Sports Medicine Advisory Council, which helped to develop a concussion return to learn and return to play protocol for the greater Spokane area. These were developed with the most current literature and practices, and are now used by all Greater Spokane League schools as well as most neighboring schools, club sports and numerous area health care providers. By creating a standardized protocol and form for the area, concussion management has been made easier for all involved.

Dr. Baker is an excellent physician and a great advocate for our profession. Congratulations to Dr. Baker on this well-deserved recognition!
