George E. Gorton, III, MS, CCRP

George E. Gorton, III, MS, CCRP, is the director of research, planning and business development at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield. George has been on staff at the Springfield Shriners Hospital since 1991. As an experienced biomedical engineer, researcher and doctoral level public health and epidemiology student, George’s 30-year career has focused on the evaluation of clinical outcomes and assessment of walking ability of children with complex movement patterns resulting from orthopaedic and neuromuscular conditions, such as cerebral palsy, myelodysplasia, clubfoot, scoliosis and many other conditions.

George is internationally recognized as an expert in gait analysis and teaches and mentors students in local university programs related to physical therapy, exercise science, kinesiology and bioengineering. George’s primary research interests are to develop and utilize valid and reliable measures to examine treatment outcomes for children and adolescents with orthopaedic, neuromusculoskeletal and developmental problems.

George has authored or co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications on accuracy and reliability of gait analysis measures; construction and validation of patient-reported outcomes using item response theory methods; orthopaedic treatment outcomes; and the complex link between biomechanics of the body, ability to perform activities of daily living, and participation in social and economic roles. George serves as a reviewer for Gait and Posture, Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, Journal of Biomechanics, Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics, and other professional journals, and sits on the Institutional Review Board for research at Baystate Medical Center.
