Inpatient care unit

Nurses and staff members in the inpatient care unit provide comprehensive acute care to patients. The staff provides patient/family-centered care to patients before and after surgery. The care encompasses the use of evidence-based practice and its goals remain intuitive towards future developments of care, patient/family-centered care and professional staff development. Furthermore, it’s where you can truly see where our motto of bringing Love to the rescue originated.

Outpatient services

The outpatient department serves as the hub of hospital activity with numerous clinics housed within the department. Services include various orthopaedic clinics, scheduled and walk-in fracture clinic, and specialized plastic surgery clinic. To provide high-quality care, staff from many disciplines work together to care for our patients. Surgeons, nurse practitioners, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, orthotics and prosthetics staff, as well as care management and child life, all collaborate with our patients and families to ensure positive outcomes.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy helps children prepare for the transition away from the hospital and back to home or school by addressing everyday skills. Occupational therapy concentrates on modifying the environment and providing specialized equipment to promote greater independence. Our therapists assess cognitive skills and upper body control for feeding, dressing, hygiene and school skills. We provide custom upper extremity splints following surgery, as well as custom home programs tailored to each child’s needs.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy is an important component of care following multiple lower extremity surgeries or to address gross motor delays. Physical therapy helps children improve their level of function so that each child can optimize their independence. Each patient’s program is tailored to his or her individual needs and developmental abilities. Family involvement is crucial and highly encouraged. Physical therapy services may include instruction of appropriate exercises to increase strength, mobility, walking quality, adaptive activities and training to use assistive devices including braces and prostheses. Shriners Hospitals for Children — St. Louis also assists the families with attaining appropriate wheelchairs to meet each individual's needs.

Recreation therapy/child life

Our child life department is staffed by certified therapeutic recreation specialists who provide services to both patients and their families to reduce the stress associated with staying in the hospital. Our specialists teach patients coping skills through offering opportunities to play, learn and interact with others in a safe environment. Play experiences help children express fears and misconceptions of hospitalization and medical procedures. Prior to upcoming procedures/hospital visits, our specialists meet on an individual basis with patients and their families to provide medical play and teaching opportunities. Medical play can help children feel informed and give the child a sense of control while becoming familiar with hospital equipment. Other services include procedural support, pain management techniques, distraction activities and sibling support.

If you have questions about your child’s behavior or adjustment before or after a hospital or medical experience, please e-mail Laura Teague or Jen Clark in our child life department. They can also be reached by phone at 314-872-8342, ext. 1155.

Patient photography

During your visit, your physician may request that photographs be taken of your child’s condition. This visual record will assist your physician in evaluating your child before and after treatment, and is often very helpful in documenting subtle changes that may occur with growth. For photographic clarity, your child may be photographed wearing minimal clothing. This is necessary so that the doctors can see as much of the body as possible.

Radiology

Radiology provides a window into the body for the physician to assess pathology, extent of deformity or injury and physical changes over time. It is a key component for diagnosis, treatment planning and surgical correction as part of the patient care team. The radiology department has a child-friendly environment and the technologists are skilled in making pediatric patients comfortable. We strive to keep radiation doses as low as possible during x-rays by tailoring technical factors to the appropriate age and size of our patients. Our images are interpreted by our board certified pediatric radiologists who specialize in many conditions specific to children.
