Parrot Heads' Music on the Bay raises more than $57,000 for the Tampa Shriners Hospital

Parrot Heads' Music on the Bay raises more than $57,000 for the Tampa Shriners Hospital

Trop rock lovers who enjoyed five days of sun, fun and live performances at the Music on the Bay festival this year raised more than $57,500 for Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa.

The Tampa Bay Parrot Heads in Paradise Club presented an oversized check to representatives of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa on April 18, at Whiskey Joe’s Bar and Grill on the Courtney Campbell Causeway, which has been the site of the event for the past seven years. Overall, the event has raised $269,500 for the nonprofit pediatric orthopaedic hospital.

“We want to thank all the attendees who gave from their hearts by supporting fundraising efforts during the event, whether it was participating in prize giveaways, auctions, buying merchandise or donating money for the Sauce Boss’ gumbo,” said Dorothy Bedlin, president of the Tampa Bay Parrot Heads in Paradise Club. The event drew about 1,300 attendees over the weekend.

More than 20 musicians and bands took to the outdoor beach stages during the five-day event from February 28 to March 4. Bill “The Sauce Boss” Wharton is a perennial favorite and cooks gumbo as Shriners Hospital patients stir the pot during his performance. Afterward, audience members get a bowl of gumbo in exchange for a donation to the hospital.

This year’s donation from the Tampa Bay Parrot Head Club will help the hospital acquire a motion analysis center. In the center, sensors evaluate a child’s gait. Doctors use the information to perform surgeries that are precise and lead to improved outcomes for patients.

Save the dates: Music on the Bay 2019 will take place February 28 through March 3.
