Shriners Children’s Texas will continue to adhere to the universal masking policy and all other COVID-19 precautions that have been in place to keep our patients, families, and workforce safe.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children, the health and safety of our patients, families, volunteers and staff is our top priority. With the evolving situation regarding COVID-19, we are closely monitoring updates from local health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and are actively following their recommendations.

Research indicates that the earlier a child is referred to our hospital, the more positive and significant the long-term outcome can be for that child.

Urgent referrals

Children with severe burns and other emergent needs are admitted through a physician-to-physician referral. The referring physician should contact the physician on call, by calling 409-770-6773.

First-time patients

If your child has a condition for which Shriners Children’s Texas offers treatment, please contact our intake/referral coordinator to schedule an appointment. Your coordinator will partner with you to gather the necessary information that will allow our physician leadership to evaluate whether your child can benefit from care at Shriners Children’s Texas in Galveston. The coordinator can be reached at 888-215-3109.

Outpatient clinic patients

If your child is not a first-time patient at Shriners Children’s Texas and you want to schedule, reschedule or cancel a follow-up clinic appointment, or for questions about registration, please call 409-770-6571. 

Surgery patients

If you have questions about your child's scheduled surgery date, please call 409-770-6969.

Pre-admission visit

If you have a planned admission, you can expect a phone call from your care manager one to four weeks prior to your admission date. A pre-admission appointment will be scheduled. If for some reason you find it necessary to cancel the admission, please let the outpatient department know as soon as possible by calling 409-770-6998.

Arrival

We will try our best to make your child’s stay with us as stress free as possible, beginning at the time of your arrival. Please plan to arrive at the time designated on your admission notice. You will be met by the admission nurse, who will review your child’s health history. Although the health history review may seem repetitive, your answers help us provide your child with the best care possible. If you have questions prior to your arrival, please call your care manager at 409-770-6998.

Additional rules and tips:

  • Because our waiting space is limited, we ask that you limit the number of family and friends accompanying you to your child’s appointment.
  • Use of tobacco products is not permitted in the hospital or on the hospital campus. Those who smoke (tobacco products and vapor products) or use chewing tobacco must leave the hospital grounds to do so.
  • Only Mylar, non-latex balloons are allowed in the hospital, in order to provide a latex-safe environment to our patients who have allergies.
  • No pets allowed except for service animals.
  • We kindly ask that you ensure your child’s vaccinations are up-to-date before visiting the hospital. Please note that the hospital does not provide immunizations to any of our patients or their family members.

Questions

Each patient is assigned a nurse to care for him or her. The nurse will show you and your child around the floor and hospital. You may have many questions about the hospital, your child’s appointment/surgery and the care that your child will be receiving. The nursing staff is always available to provide you with the information you need.
